With MyRoute-app you can create beautiful routes in the Routeplanner to navigate with your own TomTom. Exporting these routes can be done in different ways. In this manual you can read how to export with the Connector.

ATTENTION! Always create your routes using the TomTom planning map. This is a Gold functionality.

Preparation

  1. To be able to export with the Connector, you first need to install this software on your computer. See Manual 'Installing Connector' - Windows & MacOS for more information about installing the Connector;
  2. Connect your TomTom with a USB cable. ATTENTION! Always use the supplied cable. Some generic cables block the transfer of data to the TomTom;
  3. Don't forget to click 'Import Routes' once the TomTom is connected to your computer. If you don't, the computer will not be able to recognize your TomTom and therefore not be able to transfer routes;
  4. Your TomTom will indicate when it is connected to your computer and therefore that routes can be exported.

Exporting from the Routeplanner

  1. Open the desired route for exporting in the Routeplanner;
  2. Click on 'Export' to export the route with the Connector;
  3. Select your device and choose between TomTom (ITN) or TomTom (GPX 1.1), you can read more about these types of files in the last chapter of this manual;
  4. Finally, click on 'Export route' to start exporting;
  5. This completes the part on the computer and you can read in the next chapter how to continue on the TomTom itself.

When you export a 1.1 GPX route via the Connector, two files are sent to your TomTom by default:

  1. Your route with the name you entered yourself;
  2. Your route with the same name, but the word 'Track-' in front of it.

Use the file with the word 'Track-' in front of it. This is a route-track and therefore generally more accurate.

TIP! We recommend using the wireless method to transfer routes where possible. Read TomTom - Export with plan.tomtom for more information about this.

Importing on the TomTom

  1. When you have finished exporting on your computer, click 'Done' on your TomTom;
  2. Your TomTom will now show a list of which routes can be imported;
  3. Select the route(s) you want to import;
  4. Finally, click Import and you are done.

Difference between .ITN and .GPX

  • ITN: An .ITN file is specifically designed for TomTom navigation devices. An .ITN file becomes a route on your TomTom and will show each waypoint as a stop. See your TomTom manual to learn more about everything you can do with stops.
  • GPX: A .GPX file contains detailed information about a route. The TomTom sees .GPX files as tracks, so only the start and end points are visible. Tracks are generally considered more accurate than routes.

You can also visually see the difference between an .ITN route and a .GPX track on your TomTom. An .ITN route shows a solid arrow and a .GPX track shows a dotted arrow.
