With MyRoute-app, you can create beautiful routes, but of course these routes also need to be ridden. This can be done using our own navigation module within the MyRoute-app, but also with an external navigation system such as a Garmin or TomTom. In this guide, we briefly explain what is possible with the options 'Export' and 'Save As'.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is Export?

When you click the Export button in the Routeplanner, you can directly load a route onto your navigation system. This can be done using the MRA Connector, a program that needs to be installed once on your computer.

What is Save As?

While the Export option allows you to send routes directly to your navigation system, the Save As option allows you to download the route as a selected file type and store it on your computer. This way, the file can be used for multiple purposes from your computer. For some devices, the Connector is unfortunately not an option, which means you will need to export routes using this method.

Which file types are available?

There are many file types to choose from. This is because different navigation systems require different formats. Therefore, always check which file type works best with your system.

If multiple types are supported, feel free to try them and see which one works best for you.

Difference between .GPX 1.0, .GPX 1.1 and .GPX 1.2

In general, a .GPX file is the most commonly used format. The main difference is that version 1.1 is an improved version of 1.0. A .GPX 1.1 file can contain more information and transfer more data to your navigation system. Most modern navigation systems therefore support .GPX 1.1.

Older systems may not be able to process these more complex files, so in those cases, choose .GPX 1.0. In practice, however, this is rarely an issue nowadays.

.GPX 1.2 is actually a non-standard file type that we created specifically for our users. It distinguishes between shaping points and via points. In other words, it behaves like track navigation but still includes via points. This file type only works with the Garmin Zumo 3, 5, and XT.

Export file types

  • TomTom (ITN): Choose this option for older TomTom devices, as they cannot read .GPX 1.1;
  • TomTom Rider (GPX 1.1): Choose this for newer TomTom devices;
  • Garmin old (GPX 1.0): For older Garmin devices that do not support .GPX 1.1;
  • Garmin new (GPX 1.1): Generally the best choice for Garmin devices;
  • Interphone (KML): Select this option if you use Interphone;
  • BMW Car (TAR.GZ): Use this for BMW car navigation systems;
  • BMW Motorcycle (GPX 1.1): Use this for BMW Motorcycle systems.

Save As file types

  • .GPX 1.1 (route, track, POI): Most commonly used export method for modern navigation systems
  • .GPX 1.2 (route, track, POI): Also usable on newer navigation systems, includes shaping points and via points
  • .GPX 1.1 (track, POI): Specifically to save the route as a track (without waypoints). See Garmin - Export for more information about Garmin and export.
  • .GPX 1.0 (route, track, POI): For older navigation systems that cannot read .GPX 1.1
  • .ITN (route): Choose this if you use an older TomTom Rider. This format allows you to follow a route instead of a track. NOTE! This format has a maximum number of waypoints (check your device specifications). See TomTom - Exporting with the Connector for more information;
  • .TPF (route)
  • .TRF (route)
  • .KML (route): This file type should work with Google Earth;
  • .KMZ (route): This file type should work with Google Earth;
  • .OV2 (POI): Use this to store POI files for TomTom navigation systems. See TomTom- POIs for more information;
  • .CSV (POI): Use this to store POI files in Excel;
  • .TAR.GZ (route): Use this for routes intended for BMW car navigation. See BMW - Car for more information;
  • .PDF: Save the route as a PDF file;
  • HD Boom Box 2019 (track): For Harley-Davidson Boom Box systems from 2019. See Harley-Davidson - BoomBox GT for more information;
  • HD BoomBox pre-2019 (route): For Harley-Davidson Boom Box systems before 2019. See Harley-Davidson- Boombox for more information;
  • Email route: Send the route via email instead of saving it locally (choose file type in the pop-up window);
  • plan.tomtom: Save the route to plan.tomtom format. See TomTom - Export with plan.tomtom for more information.
